World powers propose Iran talks

Six major powers urge "early negotiated solution" to deadlock over nuclear programme.

Iran was close to purchasing Russian S300 missiles before Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, cancelled the sale.

Russia also joined the US, China and the European Union on Wednesday to say they are offering Iran a chance to negotiate an end to the long-running dispute over its nuclear programme.

Al Jazeera's James Bays reports from New York, where the powers issued their appeal on the sidelines of a special session of the UN General Assembly.
