Campaign to rename Volgograd as Stalingrad gets boost after Russian president expresses support for referendum on issue.

    More than 50,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Russian city of Volgograd to be renamed Stalingrad after Russian leader Joseph Stalin.

    But opponents say Stalin's reign was a terrifying period in Soviet history that must never be honoured.
