Italy rescues 5,000 migrants in five days

Navy and coastguard rescue thousands of refugees who were sailing in small boats off the coast of Sicily.

More than 5,000 migrants, mainly from Syria and Libya, have been rescued off the coast of Sicily in the last five days.

The UN refugee agency said the numbers so far in 2014 represent a 300 percent increase over the same period in 2013.
