Swiss-European Union relationship in danger

The passing of a referendum on immigration quotas has led the 28-member bloc to reexamine the relationship.

The approval of a referendum to place new quotas on immigration has thrown Switzerland's special relationship with the European Union into doubt.

The bloc's relationship with Switzerland is under review after voters narrowly backed a limit on migrants from Europe.

The Irish foreign minister said the vote was "very disturbing" and could cause "major difficulties for the movement of people in Europe".

    Al Jazeera's Simon McGregor-Wood reports.
