Efforts to save Guatemala's iconic birds

A conservation programme monitors and protects macaws' last remaining stronghold in El Peru.

The scarlet macaw, one of Guatemala's most beautiful creatures, is under threat.

A loss of habitat and an appetite to have them as pets means that there are just a few hundred of the birds now left in the wild.

But a conservation programme is trying to change that.

Al Jazeera’s David Mercer reports from El Peru.
