With Atlantis on the final shuttle mission, manned space programmes face a bleak future.



    With Atlantis on its last space mission for NASA, US astronauts face an uncertain future at the end of the 30-year shuttle programme.

    The Atlantis has on board four astronauts and an year's supply of clothes, food and other provisions for the international space station.

    Tom Ackerman explores what lies ahead for manned space programmes.
