How did UK get involved in the nuclear arms race?

The United Kingdom was the third in the world to obtain nuclear weapons and British scientists played a key role in developing the first atomic devices.

The Nobel Peace Prize is due to be awarded on December 10 to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a group dedicated to creating a world without nuclear weapons.

In the days leading up to the award in Oslo, Al Jazeera is looking at the nuclear status of countries worldwide

And despite a strong moral and political opposition to Britain retaining its nuclear arsenal, the country is not expected to give up it up any time soon.
