Every year more than half a million women across the world die while giving birth, most of them from developing countries.

Haiti has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western hemisphere. Violence, political chaos and insufficient international aid have hampered healthcare.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo travelled to Port-au-Prince, to see how expectant mothers are coping. This piece contains graphic images of child birth.
