That’s it for day two
An intriguing set of fixtures threw up not entirely unexpected results, with many predicting a draw between these two sides this evening. Still, it was as entertaining as you’re likely to get in a 1-1 tie, and we had some trademark Gareth Bale heroics to cap off an enjoyable game.
Read the match report here.
We’ll be back for Argentina vs Saudi Arabia tomorrow; set your alarm clock or pull an all-nighter depending on where you are based in the world.

Berhalter appreciates the efforts of his young team
His assessment of the second half: “Wales stepped up the pressure and we had some good counter-attacking opportunities but I thought the guys dealt with it well. We kept going until the end, we left everything out there.”
Have they still got some left in the tank for England on Friday?

Nine minutes of madness
It seems like the officials at this World Cup are keen to punish time-wasting by adding on as much as needed at the end. Perhaps the classic five mins of injury time is no more?
Enjoying the amount of time that is being added on by the officials at #QatarWorldCup2022 there is too much time wasting in football!

Rob Page knows the hard work isn’t done
The Wales manager was quick to point out that the replacement of Dan James with Kieffer Moore was nothing against the young Leeds player, they just needed something different.
On his players’ injury concerns, he said: “The medical team have got work to do, some players are cramping up in the last five minutes.”
- 21 Nov 2022 - 21:09(21:09 GMT)
A game of two-halves
The oldest cliche in football was applicable tonight as Wales looked like a team transformed in the second period after having been tepid at best before the interval.
American coach Greg Berhalter will be wondering where his team’s running went in the second 45 and will likely be disappointed they didn’t make better use of the opportunities they had to break on Rob Page’s dragons.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 21:04(21:04 GMT)
Full-time: USA 1-1 Wales
A frantic end to a game that looked like it might never get going in the first half. Hard to know who will be happier with this result, although both would have probably taken a draw if offered pre-game.
The results against Iran may decide it for Wales and the USA. England is looking in good form, with their 6-2 thrashing of Iran being the standout result of the World Cup to date.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 21:02(21:02 GMT)
99 mins: USA 1-1 Wales
Acosta picks up a yellow card for a challenge on Bale with Matt Turner closer to the halfway line than his own goal. Smart move from the American.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:59(20:59 GMT)
95 mins: USA 1-1 Wales
Thomas is on for Harry Wilson, who looks like he picked up a knock or several this evening. Hopefully, he’ll be back for Iran on Friday.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:53(20:53 GMT)
90 mins: USA 1-1 Wales
Johnson is played through on goal, but his angle is tight and he had two men tracking back. Gareth Bale was looking for the pass in the centre though, and he might have some questions for the youngster after he shoots straight at Turner.
Nine added minutes, plenty of time for either side to find a winner.

87 mins: USA 1-1 Wales
The Eagles are pushing to get themselves back in front with goalscorer Timothy Weah showing some nice stuff down the right-hand side. That will be his last action of the game as he’s replaced by Jordan Morris.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:44(20:44 GMT)
82 mins: USA 1-1 Wales
GOAL: Gareth Bale, calm as you like, slots in past Matt Turner in goal. He loves to score in the biggest games and this was certainly what his team needed.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:42(20:42 GMT)
80 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
PENALTY: Ream goes in rashly on Bale and it’s as easy a decision as you’re likely to get. Bale to take it.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:40(20:40 GMT)
78 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Rob Page rolls the dice with Brennan Johnson brought on to try and nick a goal and get the Dragons level. Neco Williams makes way with a shake of the head.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:37(20:37 GMT)
75 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Gregg Berhalter rings the changes with Dest, Musah and Sargent coming off and Yedlin, Acosta and Haji Wright brought on to try and recapture that crucial momentum.
Still, they’ve got the lead, so they won’t be too concerned as it stands.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:30(20:30 GMT)
68 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Chants of “USA” ring around the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium as the American fans try to rouse their players into something like the performance we saw in the first half.
Brenden Aaronson is on for Weston McKennie.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:27(20:27 GMT)
65 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Turner saves well from a Ben Davies diving header, and Wales are certainly knocking on the door now. Moore gets his head on the subsequent Harry Wilson corner, but his free header goes some distance over the bar.
He’ll be kicking himself for missing that.

Stats at 60 mins
An hour down, and this is how we’re looking:
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:22(20:22 GMT)
61 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Wales are winning more of the 50-50s this side of half-time and the Welsh fans who’ve made the trip to Qatar appreciate it. Moore is already looking like a wise introduction.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:18(20:18 GMT)
57 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Wales seem to have pushed their wing-backs further up the pitch, giving their centre-backs more passing options on the ball. Can Christian Pulisic et al exploit the space in behind?
So far, the answer is “no” and Wales will hope they can keep this momentum going.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:16(20:16 GMT)
USA fans cautiously optimistic
Our friends at Dupont Circle say they are happy with their team’s performance, but with a 1-0 lead, nothing can be taken for granted.
“It was pretty good and a little bit nerve-wracking, because Gareth Bale is on the field, but I like what I’ve seen so far,” said 21-year-old Mamadu Wone.
Egyptian-American Youssef Ibrahim, in a USMNT shirt with an American flag sticker on his cheek, also praised the first half display: “It’s going great so far. I hope the United States make it to the 16th and maybe more. They have a young team.”
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:13(20:13 GMT)
52 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Tim Ream picks up a yellow for a cynical foul on Gareth Bale in the centre circle. It looks like he expected that when he made the challenge.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:11(20:11 GMT)
50 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Wales have started this half with more urgency, but it would have been hard for Page’s team to have had less than that first 45. A loss right at the beginning of the World Cup would seriously damage their chances of getting out of this group, so they need something.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 20:07(20:07 GMT)
Second half under way
Wales get us back in action and will be attacking from left to right for the next 45 minutes. Can they change their fortunes?
Dan James has made way for Kieffer Moore. Expect more of those long passes to stick.

Wrexham owners weigh in
Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, who is Canadian, and his friend and TV actor Rob McElhenney, who’s from Philadelphia, recently bought Wrexham AFC, a small non-league football club in north Wales. Their exploits in coming to understand Wales, Welsh culture and its language have been documented in an FX/Disney+ doc named Welcome To Wrexham.
Maybe halftime would be a good time for Page to show his Dragons their message of support.

Halftime: USA 1-0 Wales
Berhalter will be happy with what he’s seen this evening. His side has continued to look dominant after being put in front by Weah. Rob Page needs to change something, and a defender may need to be sacrificed so they get more numbers further up the pitch.
It’s been one-way traffic in this Group B encounter.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:51(19:51 GMT)
47 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Chris Mepham picks up a booking for an obvious shirt pull on Pulisic. This one had been coming.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:45(19:45 GMT)
43 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Tim Ream is marshalling this American defence well and transferring his club form with Fulham to the national side. What a career renaissance he’s having.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:43(19:43 GMT)
40 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Rob Page’s men have had no answer to going behind yet, with the USMNT still troubling them with their running and forcing Wales to go long.
Bale picks up a booking for a tackle from behind on Musah, but the Welshman argues (correctly) that he got the ball.

US fans jubilant
US fans are jubilant to have their team back in the World Cup after an eight-year absence.
“It’s been a long journey,” said Joe Kennedy, a fan watching the match at Dupont Circle in Washington, DC.
Another fan said it was “fantastic” to see the US team step onto the field.
President Joe Biden described the team from the United States, a country of more than 300 million people, as the “underdogs” in this match. This has bemused many in Wales, a country of a little more than three million that is playing in its first World Cup since 1958.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:38(19:38 GMT)
35 mins: USA 1-0 Wales
Timothy Weah puts his side ahead with a cute finish after being fed from Christian Pulisic. You can’t say it’s any less than the USA deserve for their performance so far.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:34(19:34 GMT)
The score after half an hour is the same as the Senegal-Netherlands match earlier in the day – but what a different game. Polar opposites. The pace of this match is frenetic – neither team really settling, the USA pressing high, Wales scrabbling to make passes. Frantic, breathless stuff.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:34(19:34 GMT)
32 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
Dest blasts one over from 30 metres after finding himself wide open, and you sense he was picturing the headlines tomorrow. Musah shows some good trickery down the left and certainly no signs of nerves from the 19-year-old.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:29(19:29 GMT)
27 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
The US high press is still causing Wales problems, but they’re beginning to get their passing game going. You can tell which side has an average age in the mid-20s, given the energy Berhalter’s men are displaying in the balmy conditions.

- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:25(19:25 GMT)
22 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
Wales are struggling for passing options when they do eventually get the ball with Berhalter’s side flooding the midfield. Page has obviously set up to counterattack, but he’d expect his team to still be doing better with the possession they do get.
Tense affair so far.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:20(19:20 GMT)
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:19(19:19 GMT)
17 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
The game seems to have settled into a rhythm with the USA holding onto the ball and Wales happy to sit in with the Eagles boasting around 70 percent possession thus far.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:16(19:16 GMT)
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:15(19:15 GMT)
13 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
US full-back Sergino Dest picks up the first booking for the game for a needlessly forceful challenge on Neco Williams. Could be a long night for Dest now.
McKennie also gets a yellow for another challenge on Williams. The USA need to keep their heads here.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:13(19:13 GMT)
11 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
Wayne Hennessey makes two amazing saves in as many minutes to keep his side level in this game. Rob Page is so far vindicated for sticking with the 35-year-old keeper.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:11(19:11 GMT)
9 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
Gregg Berhalter’s side are playing the better stuff so far but are forced to go direct when their patient probing comes to little. It feels like Wales will be happy to let them pass it around in their half while they will look to hit them on the counter.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:09(19:09 GMT)
The Red Wall has come to Qatar
Singing Yma o Hyd, the rebel song that means Still Here, the Welsh fans are – as ever – in fine voice.
- 21 Nov 2022 - 19:07(19:07 GMT)
4 mins: USA 0-0 Wales
Pulisic wins a free kick after a foul from Joe Rodon. You feel you may end up with a few bumps and bruises by the time this evening is over.
However, his delivery from a promising position comes to nothing.

Watching in the US
Al Jazeera’s Ali Harb is watching the game at a party in Washington, DC.
Let’s not forget, several of the founding fathers and earliest presidents of the United States came from Wales or had Welsh heritage.
“Dozens of US and Wales fans have braved the cold weather in Washington, DC, gathering at a park in the US capital’s downtown to watch the game,” Ali tells us.
“Chants of ‘USA, USA!’ and ‘I believe that we will win’ started as soon as the US national anthem concluded,” he said.

Wales and the USA have only met twice before, and both matches were friendlies, so it’s hard to infer too much from them. For what it’s worth, the USA have the only win from those two meetings – in 2003 with US legend Landon Donovan on the scoresheet that day.

Wales makes their first World Cup appearance since 1958
In the tournament 64 years ago, Wales made it out of their group and got knocked out 1-0 by a Brazilian team that featured a 17-year-old kid who went by the name Pelé.
Any sort of similar advancement would be greeted as a success this time around.

Page sticking with Hennessey in goal
Wales Manager Robert Page talking to ITV about choosing Wayne Hennessey over Danny Ward in goal: “Wayne’s got the jersey at the moment, and his performance against Ukraine makes it difficult for me to take it off him.”

The teams are in…
USA XI: Turner, Dest, Zimmerman, Ream, Robinson, Musah, Adams, McKennie, Pulisic, Sargent, Weah.
Wales XI: Hennessey, Mepham, Rodon, B Davies, Roberts, Ampadu, Ramsey, Wilson, N Williams, James, Bale.

USA back to the drawing board
The USA went through a period of self-reflection in footballing terms after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and their focus on youth served them well in making it to the biggest show on earth this time.
With the majority of their team on the right side of 25, expect lots of energy and sweaty brows in the Welsh defence.

Welcome one and all
We’ve got a mouthwatering prospect in front of us as the USA and Wales face off in what could ultimately be the game that decides second place in Group B, given England’s 6-2 demolition job on Iran in the early kick-off.
However, the will on both sides not to lose this fixture could result in a bit of a chess match.
Stick on the kettle, grab the popcorn, and we’ll fill you in either way.
