Bangladesh fast-bowler Shahadat Hossain has been sent to jail after surrendering on charges of torturing an 11-year-old housemaid, a day after his wife was arrested.

The couple had gone into hiding after the allegations surfaced last month.

Hossain submitted a bail petition before the court after his surrender, his lawyer Kazi Mohammad Nazibullah Hiru said.

The court sent him to jail after rejecting the bail plea, a court official said.

The 29-year-old Hossain, who has played 38 Tests and 51 ODIs for Bangladesh, last played a Test against Pakistan this year but was then dropped because of injuries.

Bangladesh Cricket Board has suspended him from all forms of cricket until the charges are cleared.

Hossain and his wife Nritto Shahadat have been on the run since police raided their house on the night of September 6 after the girl was found the injured and crying girl on a street in Dhaka.

The young girl, Mahfuza Akter Happy, told police and local media that the couple beat her.

Television footage showed the girl, looking frail and thin, being taken to hospital with swollen black eyes.

“She told us that the couple beat her very often. Her hand was charred with a hot cooking paddle. She had injury marks all over her body,” inspector Shafiqur Rahman had said earlier.
