Champions League winners were without their captain Cristiano Ronaldo but managed to beat Real Sociedad.
Radamel Falcao scored only his fourth goal for Manchester United in a 3-1 victory over Leicester in the English Premier League.
The striker, who is on loan until the end of the season from Monaco, scored between Robin van Persie’s opener and Wes Morgan’s own goal.
United provisionally rose to third in the league above Southampton, which hosts Swansea on Sunday.

Sturridge came on as a second-half substitute and his angled shot in the 80th found the bottom right corner after being set up by Philippe Coutinho. Coutinho had earlier set up Raheem Sterling to score in the 51st at Anfield.
Liverpool moved above West Ham into seventh place with its third straight league win.
