Andy Murray has appointed former women’s number one Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach, the Wimbledon champion said.

Mauresmo, currently France’s Fed Cup captain, will initially take up the role for the grasscourt season.

The 34-year-old Mauresmo retired as a player in 2009, having won two grand slam singles titles, and has since gone on to coach Michael Llodra and Victoria Azarenka, while also guiding Marion Bartoli to her first major title at Wimbledon last year.

The Frenchwoman’s appointment comes after the French Open in which she watched Murray’s first-round win over Andrey Golubev.

Murray went on to reach the semi-finals where his challenge was ended by finalist Rafael Nadal.

Mauresmo’s impressive CV

Mauresmo coached countryman Michael Llodra during the 2010 grass court season and coached Marion Bartoli to her unexpected Wimbledon victory last summer.

“I’m really excited to be able to work with Andy,” added Mauresmo. “He’s an amazingly talented tennis player and I feel I have plenty to offer both him and the team around him.

“I’m looking forward to getting down to work and helping him win more Grand Slams.”
