Afghanistan’s wheelchair debut

Country’s only wheelchair basketball team provides hope for others as they prepare for their first match.

This is Afghanistan’s only wheelchair basketball team. After being formed four years ago, they are preparing to play their first every formal match in Italy.

Funded by the International Committee of the Red Cross, players have travelled from all over the country to be a part of this team.

They are trained by a coach from the United States and will face the national under-22 teams of Italy, Spain and Germany.

Some of the players have spinal injuries from car accidents, or genetic problems from birth, but the majority are victims of the country’s decades of war.

Imtiaz Tyab reports from Kabul.
