Arsenal beat holders Wigan Athletic on penalties to win the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley after the teams drew 1-1 at the end of extra time.

Jordi Gomez scored to put Wigan ahead from the penalty spot after 63 minutes with Per Mertesacker heading Arsenal’s equaliser after 82 minutes.

Hull City meet Sheffield United in the second semi at Wembley on Sunday to decide who will meet Arsenal in the Cup final on May 17.

Spurs’ recovery

Sixth-placed Tottenham came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League thanks to Christian Eriksen’s injury-time equaliser, maintaining the visitors’ hopes of European football next season.

Elsewhere, Everton leapfrogged Arsenal into the top-four with a 1-0 victory at bottom side Sunderland while Fulham and Cardiff won by the same scoreline to suck more rivals into the relegation scrap on Saturday.

With Arsenal playing Wigan in the FA Cup semi-finals, Everton took advantage by winning its seventh straight league game although it needed a 75th-minute own goal by Wes Brown to overcome Sunderland, which is seven points adrift of safety.

While Sunderland looks doomed, eight points separates the nine teams above them after third-bottom Fulham beat fourth-bottom Norwich 1-0 and next-to-last Cardiff won 1-0 at Southampton.
