Djokovic, Federer through in Paris

World number one Novak Djokovic began his Paris Masters title defence with a routine 6-3, 6-4 win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.

The top seed, who had a first-round bye, next faces 13th-seeded American John Isner or Frenchman Gael Monfils for a place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Roger Feder also reached the third round with a 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Jeremy Chardy.

Andy Murray is within one match of securing his place in the ATP World Tour Finals after easing past local favourite Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-4.

The Scot, who needs to reach the last eight at Bercy to book his ticket to the finals at the O2 Arena in London, next meets ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria or Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas.

Earlier, third-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka won for the first time in more than a month as he beat Austrian wunderkind Dominic Thiem 6-4 7-6 (6).

Wawrinka, who has already qualified for the Tour Finals, lacked consistency but prevailed on the important points, relying on his superb backhand.

It was Wawrinka’s first win since he defeated Fabio Fognini in Switzerland’s 3-2 win over Italy in the Davis Cup semifinals in September.

Seventh-seeded Milos Raonic had 19 aces in a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 win over Jack Sock, keeping his hopes of qualifying for the ATP finals for the first time alive.
