Gay former NBA star John Amaechi says Jason Collins has taken a huge step by revealing his homosexuality.
Former NBA star John Amaechi has told Al Jazeera he is grateful for the step taken by Jason Collins, the NBA star who on Monday became the first elite male team athlete to come out as gay.
Collins revealed his homosexuality in an article he wrote for Sports Illustrated magazine.
The 34-year-old center – a veteran of 12 NBA seasons – was with the Washington Wizards before they missed out on the playoffs this month.
He had also been playing for the Boston Celtics earlier this season, and is now looking for a new team after becoming a free agent.
Britain’s Amaechi, formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers, came out as gay after retiring from the sport.
