Vettel on pole in Canada
World Champion Sebastian Vettel secures 32nd pole of his career and second of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Order was resumed at the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday with Sebastian Vettel returning to pole ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.
So far this bizarre F1 season has seen six different race winners but Vettel proved he was still the driver to beat crossing the finishing line 0.303 seconds ahead of his closest rival.
It was only Vettel’s second pole of the season but far more impressively his 32nd career pole.
The 24-year-old Red Bull driver, last year’s pole-winner, scorched to the front of the grid in dramatic style with a fastest lap of the Gilles Villenauve circuit in one minute 13.784 seconds.
That meant he wound up a third of a second faster than second-placed Briton Hamilton, closely followed by championship leader Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.
Australian Mark Webber was fourth fastest in the second Red Bull followed by German Nico Rosberg of Mercedes.
Brazilian Felipe Massa followed in the second Ferrari ahead of Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus, Force India driver Briton Paul Di Resta and German Michael Schmacher in the second Mercedes.
Briton Jenson Button’s qualifying problems continued as he struggled to keep pace with rival drivers and will start 10th on the grid in the second McLaren.
But regardless of the reigning World Champion claiming pole, few will be predicting the outcome of Sunday’s race, especially after Button’s dramatic victory last year which saw the Brit come from the back of the grid to claim victory over Vettel on the final lap.
