Dzeko scores four for deadly City

It may be too early in the season to start deciding who will win the English Premier League, but Manchester City have come out of the blocks on fire.

Edin Dzeko scored four goals as City destroyed Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday in a ruthless display of the big-spending team’s credentials.

Debutant Samir Nasri set up Dzeko for two close-range finishes in the first half and the pass for the Bosnian striker’s third was provided by Yaya Toure after the break.

After Sergio Aguero hit the fourth and Younes Kaboul pulled one back for Tottenham, Dzeko put the gloss on City’s third successive win in stoppage time by curling the ball into the top corner.

After investing more than a $1 billion on players in three years, the Sheikh Mansour-owned team finally appears to be a cohesive attacking unit, with the trio of wins coming with 12 goals.

City was completely rampant at White Hart Lane as Nasri – signed from Arsenal during the week – injected even more creativity to a team boasting an array of attacking talents perhaps now only eclipsed by Barcelona.

Such an emphatic victory over Spurs exposed the gulf that now exists between the sides. It was only 16 months ago that the north London club pipped City to fourth place.

Spurs have now started the season with back-to-back losses after being ripped apart by the FA Cup champions.

At St James’ Park, Leon Best’s second-half double guided Newcastle to a 2-1 victory over Fulham and a second straight win in the Premier League.

Making his first start of the season, the Ireland striker tapped in from close range in the 48th minute after Yohan Cabaye’s shot rebounded back off the bar before grabbing his second with a poked shot from 12 yards in the 66th.

United States midfielder Clint Dempsey’s 88th-minute header from Danny Murphy’s free kick ensured a tense finale but Newcastle held on.

The result followed up a 1-0 win at fierce rival Sunderland and moved the unbeaten northeast club level on points with Liverpool, Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers after three matches. Fulham has just one point.

Stoke claimed a late goal at West Brom to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.  

Ryan Shotton poached a goal in the last minute to consign West Brom to their third straight defeat.

Shane Long had the Baggies best opportunity of the game but his header was expertly kept out by Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal.
