Mohammad Mahmudullah smashed an unbeaten 96 before Bangladesh were dismissed for 233 on the first day of the second and final Test against India in Dhaka.

India replied with 69 without losing any wicket when stumps were drawn early for bad light at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

India openers Virender Sehwag (41) and Gautam Gambhir (26) consolidated India’s hold on the match.

India lead the series 1-0 after beating Bangladesh by 113 runs in the first Test in Chittagong.

Sehwag hit six boundaries off 40 balls and Gambhir struck four boundaries.

Four short

Earlier, Mahmudullah hit 13 boundaries in 156 balls, but ran out of partners before he could score what would have been his maiden Test century.

Mahmudullah, aided by tailenders, helped steady the Bangladesh innings to 197-8 at tea after a top-order collapse.

After Bangladesh resumed at lunch on 84-5, Mahmudullah anchored the innings with nine boundaries in his 89-ball knock. He was joined by tailender Shafiul Islam (9) at tea.
