Eli Gutman has been announced as Hapoel Tel Aviv’s new coach until the end of the season, replacing Guy Luzon, who quit last week after only five months in charge.

Gutman, who resigned as AEL Limassol coach on Monday, will take over with Hapoel last in the Israeli league after the first 11 games following a home defeat to Ironi Kiryat Shmona.

Hapoel is fourth in Group G of the UEFA Cup after beating Spanish side Getafe 2-1 following a defeat at home by English team Tottenham three weeks earlier.

“It’s a great privilege to coach Hapoel Tel Aviv,” Gutman said.

“I was very happy the club approached me. I believe Hapoel is a top side and I will make every effort so that the loyal supporters see the club return to its former glory.”

Hapoel’s final UEFA Cup game is against Danish team Aab Aalborg on December 20.

Yossi Abuksis, who coached Hapoel in its last two games, will stay on as Gutman’s assistant.
