Detroit Tigers shut out Pirates

Max Scherzer struck out a season-high 14 batters and collected his American League-leading 14th victory as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2.
Scherzer (14-4) did not give a run on three hits in eight innings. JD Martinez drove in two runs for Detroit (65-54) while pinch hitter Gaby Sanchez hit a late two-run homer for the Pirates (64-57).
Elsewhere, the Los Angeles Dodgers improved to a National League-best 70-53 with their 6-4 victory over Atlanta.
Right fielder Nori Aoki’s two-run triple in the fifth inning gave the Kansas City Royals the lead they held to beat the Oakland Athletics 7-3.
