Blackhawks roll Avalanche in 7-2 win

Chicago has moved to the overall lead in the NHL standings by routing Colorado 7-2.

Patrick Sharp notched his third career hat-trick in the drubbing on Friday and set up one of Jonathan Toews’ two scores.

Among other key results, San Jose edged Pacific Division rival Phoenix in a shootout, Eastern Conference leader Pittsburgh beat Carolina in overtime, and Boston cruised to a big win over Ottawa.

Chicago’s Toews added two assists, and he and Sharp both finished with four points, while Michal Handzus and Kris Versteeg also scored for the Blackhawks, who are 7-1-1 in their past nine.

Sharp, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Friday, has 10 goals in the past nine games.

Paul Stastny and Gabriel Landeskog netted for the Avalanche.

San Jose’s Patrick Marleau scored in regulation and in the shootout as the Sharks downed Phoenix 4-3.

Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns both had a goal and an assist while Logan Couture also netted in the shootout for San Jose, which moved level with Los Angeles for third place in the West.

David Moss had two goals for the Coyotes, and Radim Vrbata scored late in the third period to help send Phoenix to overtime for the fourth straight game.

Pittsburgh’s James Neal scored at 1:03 of overtime to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory over Carolina.

NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby had a goal, and Chris Conner and Deryk Engelland each scored in the third period to help the Eastern Conference leaders win their 13th in 15 games.

Drayson Bowman scored with 2:29 left in regulation.

Boston thrashes Ottawa

Nathan Gerbe had a goal and an assist, and Andrej Sekera scored for the Hurricanes, who lost for the seventh time in eight games, with four coming in overtime.

Boston’s Tuukka Rask made 33 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Bruins beat Ottawa 5-0 and made it eight-straight home wins.

Reilly Smith scored twice and Jarome Iginla, David Krejci, and Brad Marchand also scored for the Bruins.

Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler scored twice as the Jets prevailed in a 10-goal game, edging Minnesota 6-4.

Wheeler ended a scramble in front of the net when he poked the puck under goalie Niklas Backstrom with 9:20 remaining, giving the Jets a 5-4 lead.

Evander Kane, Olli Jokinen, Dustin Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom added goals for Winnipeg, which had lost its previous three games against the Wild this season.

Dany Heatley, Justin Fontaine, Stephane Veilleux and Mikko Koivu scored for Minnesota, which has lost four in a row.

Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist as the Capitals beat the New York Rangers 3-2.

Dallas’s Erik Cole scored twice in the second period and the Stars went on to beat Nashville 4-1.

Columbus’s Cam Atkinson scored the lone goal in the shootout to lead the Blue Jackets past New Jersey 2-1.

Toronto’s Jonathan Bernier stopped all three Buffalo shooters in the shootout to give the Maple Leafs a 4-3 win over Buffalo.

Edmonton’s Ryan Smyth scored both goals in the Oilers’ 2-0 win over Calgary.
