Protests and state violence: A talk with Jimmy Carter

Former US president joins The Stream to discuss his involvement with the Human Rights Defenders Forum.

Former US President Jimmy Carter is calling on governments to rethink how they solve some of the biggest problems of today, in a non-violent manner.

The Carter Center is hosting its annual Human Rights Defenders forum with activists, scholars and community leaders to focus on ways to end violence in all its forms. They want to shift the lens away from individuals, and focus on those in power. One of the main themes of this year is finding non-violent approaches to security and law enforcement.

President Carter says it is imperative to hold governments accountable for excessive or unwarranted use of violence, especially during times of protests. State crackdowns on peaceful demonstrations are regularly making headlines. So, what needs to be done to ensure protestors are safe? President Carter joins us to address the concerns of activists from different parts of the world. Join the conversation at 19:30 GMT.
