Nepal protesters demand #CitizenshipThroughMothers

A draft law in parliament would prevent single parents from passing on citizenship to their children.

Protesters in Nepal are calling on the government to allow children of single mothers to become citizens. A new law being drafted in parliament would make it difficult for children with only one Nepalese parent to gain citizenship, since the applicant needs to provide proof of citizenship for both parents.

Of Nepal’s 27 million people, an estimated 4.3 million lack citizenship. The draft law would overturn the Citizenship Act of 2006 that guarantees citizenship to children born to either a Nepali mother or father.
