Macedonian students give a failing grade to proposed state exams

Thousands march against government plan requiring external exams for degrees.

Thousands in Macedonia are saying “No” to proposed education reforms that would require university students to take state-administered exams before receiving their degree. According to Balkan Insight, if students fail the exam twice, they will not be allowed to continue their studies. 

Officials contend the exams are meant to improve the quality of education, but students say the reforms are unconstitutional and threaten university autonomy. 

Students took to the streets of the Macedonian capital on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the government plan. Many joined the march online with #СтудентскиМарш (“Students March) and #СтудентскиПленум (“Student Assembly”):
