Danish art show banned in Sweden for ‘racist’ content

Performance art using make-up to alter participants’ ethnicity slammed by Swedes.

More than 200 Swedes signed a petition accusing a Danish-produced art show of racism, after images of participants in make-up resembling blackface were circulated. The performance, entitled Through Different Eyes, was cancelled from a Swedish festival due to the outcry, despite running last year.

The performance art aimed to give “a deeper understanding of discrimination” by inviting participants to assume other ethnicities in a crowded public space to understand what it feels like to be in someone else’s skin. Global Stories, the group behind the performance, has exhibited this project in Brazil, Denmark and other countries around the world.
