US Democratic presidential favourite Barack Obama has built a unique campaign on the messages of “change” and “hope”. His deviation from the typical US political campaign script has resonated strongly with many Americans who have turned out in large numbers for his rallies and events.

But Obama’s message of “hope” and “change” has also reached beyond the shores of America to attract a significant fan base around the world. But can any candidate deliver real change in the current Washington political environment?

On Tuesday’s Riz Khan we look at the candidacy of Barack Obama and ask why so many are pinning their hopes on an Obama presidency.

Joining our programme is Gene Healy, the author of The Cult of the Presidency, Charles Smith, a reporter for South Africa’s Media 24, and Khaled Hassan from the Daily Times in Pakistan.
