A legend in American television, Phil Donahue has the distinction of being the creator and star of the first tabloid talk show in US history.

The Phil Donahue Show ran for 26 years straight domestically, before ending in 1996.

He has been a major anti-war voice in mainstream American media, and his short-lived show on MSNBC (a 24-hour cable news channel in the US) was cancelled amid reports that the network feared his liberal stance.

He has been quoted as saying, “We have an emergency in the media and we have to fix it”.

In 2007 Donahue produced a documentary, Body of War, about Tomas Young, an American soldier who was shot and paralysed five days after his tour of Iraq began.

Young returned to join the anti-war movement in the States.
