Iyad Allawi talks to Riz Khan
On Wednesday, Riz speaks with one of Iraq's most powerful politicians. As a leading opposition figure in exile, Iyad Allawi was instrumental in advocating for the war that eventually toppled the former president, Saddam Hussein.

After the US-led invasion and departure of Paul Bremer, the former head of the Coalition Provisional Authority, Allawi became the first prime minister of Iraq. But as support for his vision of a secular Iraq waned and gave way to fierce sectarianism, he was replaced with a religious Shia, Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

In the elections of December 2005, Allawi's party, the Iraqi National List, won 25 out of 275 seats. The party joined the government of Nuri al-Maliki in May 2006, but left it this August.
