Delhi sees worst communal violence in decades

The death toll in Delhi’s worst religious violence in decades has risen to more than 40 people.

This video shows a mosque on fire in Delhi as a saffron flag is being raised over it.

The suburbs in northeastern Delhi have become a battleground in the fight over India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), dubbed by critics as “anti-Muslim”.

It is the worst communal violence to hit the national capital city in decades. Homes, shops and mosques have been vandalised and set alight.

People protesting against the CAA have accused the police of failing to stop Hindu nationalists attacking them and, in some cases, being involved in the violence.

“I was standing with my mother and sisters, protesting peacefully, when police and people with the mob started firing repeatedly,” Mohammad Usman, one of the protesters said.

“They fired tear gas. One person was shot in the chest and another one in the hand.”
