Inside Story

Is the boycott movement a threat to Israel?

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is gaining momentum as it turns 10.

It started a decade ago with one aim: to boycott Israel as a non-violent movement in order to defend the Palestinian cause. The campaign now has thousands of volunteers worldwide, lobbying to sever ties with Israel.

BDS has managed to gain strength in recent years. Some Israeli officials, who simply ignored it, now view as a “strategic threat”. What worries Israel most is that some of the movement’s positions on goods produced in the West Bank settlements are now being embraced by some European governments.

A counter campaign against BDS is being mounted in the US, with presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton joining the chorus.

So, what’s the true impact of BDS? And does it help Palestinians?
