The search for Palestinian peace

Inside Story discusses Hamas, Fatah and another attempt to achieve Palestinian unity.

 

As Egypt looks to intensify its mediation efforts between Hamas and Fatah, the Hamas leadership headed to Cairo on Monday.

It is the first time in months that Khaled Meshaal, the Hamas leader, has visited Cairo and it is just days after Egyptian officials spoke to Fatah leaders.

Egypt is the mediator between the Palestinian factions and set a deadline of July 7 to come up with a power sharing agreement.

But as the deadline is nearing, tension in between the two factions is only increasing, raising the issue of the Palestinians wasting the opportunity of a favourable US position.
 
Why can Palestinians not find peace and stop fighting amongst themselves? And what is the chance for reconciliation?

Presenter Kamahl Santamaria is joined by Osama Hamdan, Hamas’ representative in Lebanon, Khalil Anani, a political analyst at the Al-Ahram Centre for Strategic Studies in Cairo, and Mark Perry, an author and the director of the Conflicts Forum.
