More than 50 heads of state have converged on the Romanian capital Bucharest for the largest Nato summit.

This summit portrays the alliance as deeply divided on many issues.

The two urgent of these issues are the situation of its troops in Afghanistan and its expansion to include countries in Eastern Europe.

The summit is to be the last ever Nato summit attended by George Bush as US president.

And Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, is expected to arrive on Friday for his first visit to a Nato summit.

After almost 60 years, Nato is facing new challenges and Afghanistan is seen as a crucial test for its credibility.

Inside Story, with presenter Imran Garda, discusses what Nato should be doing to make its new mission a success.
