Unemployment rates in Nablus are high, but even for those who do have jobs, Israel’s military presence means ordinary businesses have to deal with some very extraordinary conditions for their employees.
Employers have to deal with the fact that their workers can be imprisoned without trial all too easily; many people desperate for work battle through the long checkpoint controls to seek work in Israel itself; and for the many unemployed of Nablus, the end of the month just brings more debt.
