What’s next for the Party of Trump?

The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump will be seen as a major sign of whether the Republican Party is willing to cut ties with perhaps the most sharply divisive US president in history.
Although party leadership has criticised Trump’s role in the January 6 insurrection at the US capitol, his hold on the party remains strong. Forty-five out of 50 Republican senators voted last week to dismiss the upcoming trial, arguing it was unconstitutional to impeach a former president.
