Argentina’s economic shake-up

Will President Macri’s reforms revitalise the country’s economy?

Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri came into office with a promise – zero poverty in the country. He also pledged to eliminate alleged corruption and revive the economy. But more than seven months on, many are unhappy with the measures he has taken, including some of his supporters.

Discontent has been growing for months among Argentines who have seen prices for basic services skyrocket over the year. This month, thousands in the capital Buenos Aires took to the streets banging pots and pans to protest steep tax hikes to utilities.

But Macri says these reforms are necessary for economic recovery, adding patience is needed to undo the deficits inherited from previous administrations. So, is his plan the solution to the country’s fiscal challenges?
