#EstuproNuncaMais: Brazil gang rape causes mass outrage
Thousands take to the streets to protest violence against women.
“I was drugged, I was very groggy, there were lots of people with guns, lots of young guys laughing and talking.” Those are the words of the 16-year-old victim of a gang rape, allegedly committed by more than 30 men in Rio de Janeiro.
The victim also says when she initially went to the police, they made her feel at fault for the incident and failed to act. That changed last week after some of the men involved posted a video they had filmed of the incident causing an uproar, both online and in the streets. Two arrests followed, and warrants have been issued for four more suspects. But women’s rights activists say the protests are about more than just that one incident, and that Brazil has a ‘culture of rape’ that must be changed. On Wednesday at 19:30 GMT, we discuss how they can achieve that goal.
