Bus drivers strike in El Salvador after gang-related killings

Bus operators demand better security as thousands left stranded on the streets.

After a string of murders of transport workers, bus drivers have halted their services in El Salvador. The strikes were prompted after five bus drivers were found dead on Monday and two buses were set on fire over the weekend. Some bus operators stopped service after they reported threats from gangs, while others feared possible attacks. Gangs have been known to target transport workers for extortion money.

As the strikes wreak havoc on thousands of commutes, the National Association of Private Enterprise has asked employers to be flexible with worker hours.
