Video: Egyptian female cop arrests, slaps alleged harasser
Many online praise officer and country’s campaign targeting sexual violence.
A video of an Egyptian police woman arresting an alleged sexual harasser on Sunday has gone viral. The officer pulled the accused into a Cairo cinema surrounded by a crowd and shocked him with an electric rod. She then slapped him and forcefully sat him down. Many online have praised efforts to combat harassment using female police. Others questioned the officer’s conduct. His arrest is one of dozens during public celebrations of the Muslim holiday of Eid al Fitr.
Authorities are deploying more female officers on the streets to crackdown on sexual violence in a country where nearly 99 per cent of women have been harassed at some point, according to the UN. Egypt criminalised sexual harassment last year and those found guilty face no less than six months in jail and a fine up to $700.
