Online sexism takes over India’s #SelfieWithDaughter campaign

Actress becomes target of abuse after criticising Prime Minister’s selfie campaign against female infanticide.

Women speaking out against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s #SelfieWithDaughter campaign have found themselves at the receiving end of sexist commentary and trolling. Modi said the selfie campaign is a step towards closing the sex ratio gap in parts of the country, and used it to promote his “Save Your Daughter, Educate Your Daughter” initiative.

Earlier this week, actress Shruti Seth and activist Kavita Krishnan tweeted their disagreement with the campaign. Seth, in a series of tweets that were later deleted, wrote:
