Modi amplifies #SelfieWithDaughter campaign, eliciting support and scepticism in India
Indian PM calls on citizens to tweet selfies with daughters to push for women’s empowerment.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is calling on all Indians to tweet selfies with their daughters in an attempt to gain support for his Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao or “Save Your Daughter, Educate Your Daughter” campaign.
During his “Mann Ki Baat” weekly radio show on Sunday, Modi said the selfie campaign is a step towards closing the sex ratio gap in some parts of the country. While Modi’s campaign was launched in January, his inspiration for the selfie push comes after a village in the northern Indian state of Haryana launched a ‘selfie with daughter’ campaign to end female foeticide. Haryana reportedly has one of the worst gender ratios in the country.
