#GoHomeDeRay asks black activist to get out of Charleston

DeRay Mckesson prompts Twitter backlash after attending gatherings for Charleston massacre victims.

Prominent civil rights leader and #BlackLivesMatter activist, DeRay Mckesson, found himself at the centre of a Twitter storm on Sunday morning after traveling to Charleston, South Carolina to join crowds mourning the massacre of nine black churchgoers. DeRay, who came to prominence in the Black Lives Matter movement after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, sparked backlash on Twitter after tweeting comments about race and showing up at gatherings for the nine victims.

Criticism of Mckesson in Charleston reignited the hashtag #GoHomeDeRay, which appears to have first targeted the activist when he traveled to Texas after police violently broke up a pool party. The hashtag trended on Twitter Sunday morning and now has over 29,000 mentions.
