Police evict students occupying a Montreal university
Police clashed with students who barricaded themselves at a University of Quebec.
The University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) called in police to disperse students who staged an occupation at a campus building on Wednesday night. The students were angered by the earlier arrests of some 20 anti-austerity protesters who were disrupting classes. The university won a court injunction last week forbidding such disruptions after some students blocked access to classes. Under planned austerity measures, Quebec’s government will cut key social services and institute yearly tuition hikes.
