Malaysia’s national police chief pledges continued Twitter monitoring

Inspector-General dismisses Twitter ban efforts, assuring that thousands of officers will police social media at his command.

Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar made clear on Wednesday that attempts to ban him on Twitter will not stop him from monitoring social media content.

Khalid said during the 208th Police Day celebration in Kuala Lumpur that 126,000 officers will be watching Twitter upon his request. He added his force will take the necessary steps to prevent the disruption of public order. Khalid has been criticised for reportedly utilising Twitter to initiate investigations against users under the Sedition Act of 1948.

His statement comes in response to a campaign launched on Monday by the Abolish Sedition Act Movement (GHAH) that urges Twitter users to report online harassment by Khalid.
