Ecuadorian cartoonist in trouble for mocking stuttering politician
Xavier Bonilla faces court hearing after poking fun at assembly member’s speech.
Ecuadorian cartoonist Xavier Bonilla (also known as Bonil) and his newspaper El Universo are being sued by the government for mocking a lawmaker’s stuttering speech. Bonilla, originally accused of racism, was then charged with “economic discrimination” after he mocked congress member Agustin Delgado, a former football player who comes from a poor background.
The cartoon shows the politician using his nickname, Tin, stuttering a sentence, then exclaiming “Poor Tin” before the second bubble suggests no one would feel sorry for him if they saw his large government salary.
The cartoon implicitly questions Delgado’s credentials as he has no college degree and has been accused of winning a seat in congress due to President Rafael Correa’s influence.
