#NoPodeis: Spain’s ‘March for Change’ faces opposition
Spaniards tweet in response to left-wing party’s Madrid rally.
As thousands of supporters of Spain’s anti-austerity Podemos party marched in Madrid on Saturday, many online criticised the young movement. In response to the party’s name, Podemos (“We can“), opponents shot back with hashtag #NoPodeis (“You can’t“).
The marchers protested against the country’s two-party system and austerity measures. Podemos’ leader Pablo Iglesias said on Saturday that he will oust the current government in upcoming elections.
Using #NoPodeis, many online responded with memes and gifs to criticise the party members for their alleged tax irregularities. The hashtag was used more than 60,000 times.
