#GlobalDivestmentDay: Activists call for ‘fossil free’ investing

Rallying under the slogan “fossil fuels have no future”, environmental groups began a global day of action Friday, calling for divestment from the fossil fuel industry.

Marking the first ‘Global Divestment Day’, activists rallied in the streets of Sydney, Oslo, New York and other cities, urging institutions and individuals to cancel investments in oil, gas and coal companies.

In the UK, the Guardian reported that more than 1,400 banking customers planned to move their savings accounts to protest their banks’ investments. Organisers say divestment from fossil fuels is needed to help combat climate change, but some critics call the strategy misguided.
