Namibians lash out against proposed #SolidarityTax

Government announces new tax to contribute to anti-poverty measures.

Namibians are criticising government plans for a new tax aimed at combating poverty in the country. Last week, President Hage Geingob said his government’s next budget would introduce a “solidarity tax” to support anti-poverty programs such as food banks.

On Tuesday, Namibia’s finance minister said the tax would be applied to those with an annual income of more than $79,000 Namibian dollars, approximately $5600 USD.

Though the government says details of the tax have not yet been finalized, some Namibians worry the county’s middle and lower income classes would be unfairly burdened.
