The Stream

In the Niger Delta, decades of environmental disaster

Activists fight for clean up as hundreds of oil spills blight the region each year.

In 1995, environmental and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 others were executed by Nigeria’s military government on trumped up murder charges. Known as the Ogoni Nine, they fought for social justice in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta and stood up to resource exploitation and pollution by Royal Dutch Shell. Twenty years after their deaths, why haven’t the oil spills stopped?
