#EndTaxFreeNFL activists say US football league profits from racism
Lawmaker proposes bill to end tax-exempt status of the National Football League.
US Senator Maria Cantwell announced that she will put forth legislation to revoke the tax-exempt status of the National Football League (NFL) due to the Washington Redskins’ name which is considered to be a racial slur against Native Americans. Cantwell was joined by members of Change the Mascot, a coalition of Native American leaders who have long pressed the Washington football team to drop their name.
The NFL rakes in about $10 billion in annual revenue, yet is designated as tax-exempt because of its role as a business association not organised for profit. Many online lauded Cantwell for her announcement.
